Our experienced dentist offers a variety of endodontic treatments to help remove decay and infection from the nerves and roots of your teeth to help preserve your healthy smile. Endodontic treatment often saves damaged teeth from extraction so that you can continue to enjoy your natural teeth for years to come. While Dr. Shannon Pye can perform most endodontic procedures in our office, he will refer molars requiring treatment to a trusted endodontic specialist. Call us today at 843-549-5913 to make your appointment, and to learn more about endodontics in Walterboro, South Carolina!
Endodontics is the area of dentistry focused on the study and treatment of the dental pulp. The pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth that includes the tooth’s living connective tissue and cells, and it houses the tooth nerves and blood vessels. If this area of the tooth becomes injured or diseased, it often results in serious tooth pain and sensitivity. When infection and damage in the dental pulp go untreated, they can cause the tooth to die, necessitating extraction. The goal of endodontic treatment is to restore the health of the tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction.
The most common type of endodontic treatment is root canal therapy, which is often simply called a root canal. During root canal therapy, our dentist removes the injured and infected tissues from the tooth, thoroughly cleans the tooth, and fills the tooth. The tooth is then capped with a restoration, such as a dental crown, to protect the tooth and restore its structure and appearance.
If root canal therapy is not the right treatment for you, or if infection reoccurs after the tooth has undergone a root canal, our dentist may recommend another endodontic treatment. Other endodontic treatment options include root canal retreatment, apicoectomy, pulpal debridement, and pulpotomy.
We invite you to contact our office today to learn more about endodontics and the services we provide.
Dr. Shannon Pye offers a wide range of periodontal therapies to help combat gum disease and restore your oral health. Periodontics is the dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and other conditions that affect the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque. When plaque builds up on the teeth, the bacteria irritate and inflame the gum tissues. If this condition is not treated in the early stage, called gingivitis, it can develop into periodontitis, which is the more advanced stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is characterized by red, tender, bleeding, and swollen gums, while periodontitis typically involves gum recession and can eventually lead to bone loss and tooth loss. Gingivitis can usually be controlled and even reversed with additional professional cleanings and improved at-home oral care if the condition is diagnosed and treated early; periodontitis, on the other hand, generally requires more involved, frequent treatment. We are pleased to provide high-quality treatment for gum disease at our office to return your smile to good health.
In addition to treatment for periodontal disease, periodontics includes the placement of dental implants. Dental implant placement requires specialized, advanced training for optimal results. To learn more about periodontics and how we can care for your smile, we welcome you to contact us today. Our dentist and team look forward to caring for you!
